Water-plants also abound — the ever-welcomewater-lily, whose level leaves are so effective inindicating surface : the water crowfoot, with its broadflower and thread-like leaves ; the arrow-head, sonamed from the shape of its fine leaf, displaying itsopen flower of three petals ; the delicate persicaria,. REEDS. whose leaves of variegated green and red float on thesurface, whilst the spikes of its pink flowers standboldly out of the water ; and, last, the flowering rush,raising its graceful stem adorned with a crown offlowers, purple or white, whilst its long grassy leavesrise from the base of the stem in many a curve abovethe water. 8 VI CAT COLES LIFE AND WORKS. The stillness of the river is at places broken onlyby bird life.
