Valle Crucis Abbey, Llangollen, Wales, UK: late C14th decorated stone screen of the book cupboard set into the wall of the chapter house in the E range of the cloister. Beam holes above the screen held braces for the lean-to roof of the cloister arcade. The cloister walkways provided places for the monks to exercise & study. Abbey founded 12 January 1201 by Madoc ap Gruffydd Maelor the ruler of Powys with 13 Cistercian monks & several lay-brothers from the abbey of Strata Marcella near Welshpool. Named Valle Crucis (Valley of the Cross) after the C9th Eliseg's Pillar a little to the north.
