Even forsythias are barely in bloom and, except for Dirca palustris. Benzoin sestivale, amelan- chiers, Erica carnea and one or two daphnes and small rhododendrons, there are no shrubs in flower. Magnolias are not yet fully open, and no bedding tulips are open except in warm locations. Anderson Bros., of Woburn, are send- ing in some fine Peach Blossom gladioli, calendulas, callas, sweet peas and candy- tuft. Welch's, at 280 Devonshire street, re- port a decided shortening up of flower receipts and active business. They have many advance orders booked for Moth- ers' day and Memorial day. Local nurseries report heavy cancella- tions of planting contracts and a decided slump in business, presumably attrib- utable to the war. W. N. C. TO EEADICATE LAWN WEEDS. I have just taken charge of a private place on which the lawns are extremely weedy, having as much chickweed, shep- herd's purse, etc., as Bermuda and ever- green grass. Will you please advise me how to proceed to get the lawns in good order? I could plow the land and resow the grass, but this would not rid me of the weed seeds. The lawns slope, so that the drainage should be all right. W. A. H.—Ga. It would not improve matters to plow and at once reseed your lawns. Two courses could be adopted to clean the land. Plow it and leave it fallow for a season, constantly stirring the soil until time for reseeding in the fall. Another and a better plan would be to plow the lawns now and sow them with a heavy cover crop, such as cow peas or soy beans. These crops would smother the weeds. They could be plowed in and thus leave a lot of humus in the soil. Harrow
