He received his education in the common schools,and at Darlington Academy, from whose rustic walls went forthmany to places of influence and honor. After leaving theacademy, he taught school for a number of terms in Darlington,Old Brighton, and New Wilmington. While teaching at NewWilmington he met his future wife, Miss Margaret Carman, whowas then a pupil in his school. Upon his marriage on October27, 1851, he took up his permanent residence in Beaver.
