Apainting of the same scene was reproducedby Meigs in the same journal in 1899. gives an interesting account of thepierres de tete endemic of those early Leyden copy has the \\ords Den. The Deacon of Rous (Den Deken Rouse). Probably pains and headaches were attri-buted to the same cause. At any rate,pierres de tete opened up a fair field for thecharlatans, who apparently made incisionsin the scalp and then dropped the supposedstone into the patients lap or a neighbor-ing bucket. Very likely wens were alsoremoved as stones. This particular engraving has a specialinterest, because it is one, and the bestone, of the three copies of this engravingnow extant. Of the other two, one is inAmsterdam and the other in Leyden.
