Johnny Clegg is a South African musician performing at Kirstenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa


Johnny Clegg is a South African musician who was born in the UK in 1953 and subsequently lived in Israel, Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa. When he was 14 he learned to play the guitar. He met a Zulu flat cleaner who played street music near his home. For the next two years Clegg learned the fundamentals of Zulu music and traditional Zulu inhlangwini dancing. He subsequently formed two bands, Juluka and later Savuka. Clegg is an important figure in South African popular music history, with songs that mix Zulu and English lyrics and African/European/Celtic music styles.
