SPASMOPHILIA AND EPILEPSY BY J. P. SEDGWICK, University of Minnesota. Recent studies of the electrical reactions of children havemade it possible to set apart a certain group of convulsions, anddifferentiate them from epilepsy. This group is now knownamong pediatrists as that of spasmophilia. The normal galvanic electrical reactions are given by vonPirquet^ as shown on the chart. B Normal Anodal Hyper-excitabilityD E Kathodal O 45 K AK c coo 9 ij K AK C COO K AKc c oo K AKc coo K AK c c oo. A and B represent the normal reactions in infancy. The verticalcolumns represent, in order, kathodal closing, anodal closing, anodal opening and kathodal opening. The number of milliam-peres necessary to produce a contraction is shown on the height of the blocking in, in black, shows the amount of cur-rent necessary to produce a muscular contraction with the use ofthe normal electrode of Stinzing* over the peroneal nerve. Ac-cordingly, in the normal child no contraction should be producedwith less than five milliamperes with either the anodal or katho-dal opening. Charts C, D. E, and F show the hyper-irritability ofthe spasmophilic diathesis. The well known conditions of laryngospasm or spasmodiccroup, spasmodic apnoea, tetany in children, convulsions in chil- *3 sq. cm. surface. SPASMOPHILIA AND EPILEPSY 9 dren and certain conditions resembling petit mal are shown bythe electrical reactions to be manifestations of the same spasmo-philic diathesis
