M J. J. HOF, Land Off i c e. 117 and 119 West Water J. J. Hof, the subject of thissketch, came to America in 1865,from his native land, Norway. Aftervisiting various portions of the UnitedStates in search of lands, he finally pur-chased large tracts in Wisconsin, in theFox River Valley, near Green Bay andAppleton, which lands are renowned fortheir rich soil, and freedom from floods,and lie in a good climate. After holdingthese lands many years he decided tocolonize them, which he did slowly, onlylocating a few families on them each yearand carefully watched their progress. Duringof83,84he locat-numberslies, ex-largeimprov-lands byyeyin g,ins roads the yearsand 85ed largeof fami-p e n d e dsums ining thesub - sur-and etc., and has been very fortunate in pro-curing a thrifty class of settlers, mostlyPoles. They are good farmers and arehappy and contented in their new are well cared for by Mr. Hof, whomakes weekly trips to look after their in-terest and welfare. They have a smallchurch and school of their own, and theyhave in process of erection a larger houseof worship. A large sawmill has beenerected by Mr. Hof in the centre of thecolony, which is rented and run by further information, maps and circu-lars address Mr.
