Johann Adam Klein. The Hungarian Woman Standing in the Door. 1817. Germany. Etching in black on ivory wove paper Visiting the Hungarian town of Forchtenau (Hungarian Fraknó) in the area of Lake Neusiedl in 1817, Klein made a preparatory drawing for this print that is now in the Dresden State Art Collections. The artist depicted the woman’s bare feet, basket, and hat in detail while casting stark shadows on her face. These suggest both her rural lifestyle and his own emotional journey at the time, which helped him cope with the recent death of his father.
