Macleod's Tables - Distinctive flat-topped hills at the north west of the Isle of Skye, Scotland

Looking south west from Dunvegan, across Loch Dunvegan and Garrachan, to Macleod's Tables. Distinctive flat-topped mountains at the north west of Skye. Stepped hillsides formed by weathering of softer rock around the hard central portions of successive flat flows of basaltic lava. Folklore story of local chief Crotach holding a banquet for a noble from Edinburgh on Healabhal Mhor (right) in early C16th. Starting at sunset, lit by clansmen bearing torches, he proved he had the best banqueting hall with the most impressive roof, table & candelabra (ie. sky, hilltop & stars).
