In commencing the complete tour at Gardiner, immediatelyafter leaving the unique railroad station built of massive logs, thelarge six-horse coaches pass through the great entrance arch, andalong Gardiner River past Eagle Nest Crag to Mammoth HotSprings, where the afternoon is spent in viewing the beautifulsprings and travertine terraces. These consist, principally, ofLiberty Cap, Pulpit, Jupiter, Angel, and Cleopatra terraces withtheir accompanying springs, Cupids Cave, the White Elephant,Bath Lake, Orange Geyser, and many smaller vents and caves andsteam fissures. These rise tier above tier, and form a wonderfularray of springs on the side of Terrace Fishing at outlet of Yellowstone Lake Fort Yellowstone, the military post in the Park, is at MammothHot Springs. Here, also, are the headquarters of the U. in charge of Park improvements and the U. S. Commis-sioner. Mammoth Hot Springs is thus the Capital of the Park. There are two troops of United States cavalry quartered in thePark, both winter and summer. They carefully patrol the roadsand other parts of the Park and preserve the phenomena fromspoliation. Here, also, deer are almost invariably seen, oftensporting on the greensward in front of the hotel. From Mammoth the ride is delightfully interesting. GoldenGate is recognized as the precipitous gorge is entered. Theheavy timber is encountered near Willow Creek, and a littlefarther on is the famous spring which supplies many thousandtourists annually with Natures own apollinaris water.
