Some time before thejudges took their places upon the Webster,—until now the inti-mate companion of senators, judges, di-vines, men of literature and science—entered, and immediately took his seat inthe felons dock. His step was light andelastic, in crossing towards his place, andhis countenance betrajed a marked degreeof calm and dignified composure. On sit-ting down, he smiled, as he saluted severalof his friends and acquaintances, to some of whom he familiarly nodded; and astranger would have taken him for an or-dinary spectator.
