Placental tissue. Fluorescence deconvolution micrograph of a longitudinal section through a mature chorionic villus, showing connective tissue (green), proteins associated with embryo development (red), and cells of the syncytiotrophoblast layer (syncytiotrophoblasts, blue). The syncytiotrophoblast layer forms the outermost foetal component of the placenta and contributes to its barrier function. Chorionic villi are finger-like projections that sprout from the outermost maternal layer (chorion) and are 'invaded' by the syncytiotrophoblasts. This increases the surface area available for nutrient exchange between the mother and the foetus. Magnification: x700 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
