In 1837 he was appointed to take some Mexican prisoners toMatamoros and exchange them for Texas prisoners who hadbeen captured by the Mexicans, but they made Karnes a pris-oner. He soon escaped. He diedin 1840 of the severe wound he had received at the hands ofthe Indian chief the previous year.
