Sometimes greatpieces broke off and tumbled with a crash intothe burning lake, only to be remelted and thrownup anew. Not two inches beneath the surface,the grey lava on which we were standing andsitting was red-hot. A stick thrust through itcaught fire, a piece of paper was immediatelydestroyed, and the gentlemen found the heatfrom the crevices so great that they could notapproach near enough to light their pipes.
