Map of Moscow, Russia. This 16th-century map was drawn by the German diplomat, geographer and historian Sigismund von Herberstein (1486-1566). Herberstein was born in the Duchy of Carniola and served as a diplomat for the Austrian regions of the Habsburg Monarchy. He made two trips to the Grand Duchy of Moscow in 1517-1518 and 1526-1527. This woodcut, labelled in Latin, is from a 1571 edition of Herberstein's 'Rerum Moscoviticarum' (1549). This book was one of the earliest Western European sources of information on Russia. The map shows the city's buildings, walls and rivers.
