This divisionpasses through San Luis Potosi, the largest city in thatsection of Mexico. It has a population of over 60,000 andis one of the most important business centres in the Re-public of Mexico. The scenery along the Mexican Centralbetween San Luis Potosi and Tampico, is, in some respects,the finest in Mexico and many tourists make the trip sim-ply to see it. The plans of the Mexican Central management includethe building of a short line from Mexico City to Tampicoand one northeast to the border. Undoubtedly both of 53. 54 these lines will be built in due time. When the formerextension is completed Mexico City, the capital, largestcity and centre of activity in the Republic, will be con-nected with Tampico, already an important harbor, anddestined to be a much greater one, by the most direct rail-road line possible. With the completion of the PacificCoast extension to Manzanillo, now under way, the com-pany will have a direct line from the Gulf to the proposed short line to the border would give theMexican Central another gateway on the north and a valu-able additional outlet to the central west and eastern cen-tres of the United States.
