Wherever a cropwhether a crop of weeds or of fall forage, grows late in the fall, thefollowing corn crop is slow in starting. That is, the available plantfood was drawn upon until cold weather set in, thus not allowing theformation of soluble compounds during the warm weather of theautumn months. In the rougher corn sections, fall plowed fieldswash so badly and ditches form so quickly that the practice shouldbe discontinued. This is especially true of soils which have beendepleted of their humus. There being no organic matter present toretain the moisture and hold the particles of soil, the whole mass 156 CORN. slumps away and is carried to loAver levels. Such conditions havecompelled corn growers in these localities to rotate, and in somecases to even sow the fields to grass Fig. 67.
