The Rock Island road tendered a special trainand entertainment, and the return trip was a record breaker,the I Si miles being covered in three and a half hours, includ-ing five stops to let off passengers. The bridge is, 850 feetlong, built by the PhcKiiix Bridge Company, designed andsuperintended by Ralph Modjeski, of Chicago. The drawis swung by electric motors installed bv Geo. P. Nichols &. THE NEW ROCK ISLAND BRIDGE LOOKING WEST. Bro., of Chicago, and is one of the finest electric installationsin the world. The societv also visited the Arsenal andinspected the new water power development. A dinner wasgiven by C. E. Schauffler, Chicago manager of the EmpireCement Company, whose cement is used in the extensivegovernment work on the Island. The new bridge is double decked, the Rock Island tracksoccupjdng the upper, and the roadway and street railway thelower deck. The superstructure weighs over 5,000 tons andcost $6,800,000. Ladv passengers persist in using the smoking cars whichare run at intervals on the Union Traction lines in Philadel-phia, in winter, even though informed by conductors whenboarding the cars.
