Pediatrics(; Lond.) . cow, on April 12, that time, according to the statement of her relatives, shehad taken nothing, either solid or liquid, into her mouth fortwelve days. The father of the patient had had syphilis, deathoccurring from pulmonary tuberculosis; the mother, a nervousinvalid for many years, had committed suicide during an attack of PEDIATRICS. 187 acute manici. The chikl had been perfectly healthy up to the ageof nine years. At that time she had an attack of paralysis of bothlower and upper limbs. There was no apparent cause for thetrouble, which persisted in spite of the measures instituted for threemonths, when it suddenly disappeared, after the child had received afright. Three years ago she again became paralyzed, this time in thelower extremities only. The trouble lasted six weeks, and againsuddenly disappeared after a moral shock. For some years the pa-tient had had a capricious appetite ; a year ago she had begun tohave frequent vomiting spells after eating ; for the past three. Fi ig- months apparently all the food ingested was vomited ; and, asalready stated, for the past twelve days she had taken absolutelynothing. Upon admission into hospital, she was greatly emaciated, asshown in Fig. i, her weight being only 18,200 gm. (40 lbs.), and thisfell to 18,000 gm. in the course of the four days immediately fol-lowing admission. After a long struggle, as a result of much per-suasion, she was induced to take three dessertspoonfuls of milk, which she retained, although she complained bitterly of a severepain at the pit of her stomach. It was remarked, however, that thechild gave evidence of suffering only when some one of the hospital i88 PEDIATRICS. attendants was near her bed. Little by little she was induced toincrease the allowance of milk, and so much progress was madethat, by the end of a week, she was eating with a good appetite andapparent relish. She was weighed again on April 23, when she wasfound to have gained over three pounds
