'Obelisk, Central park. It is a monolith, or single stone, from the granite quarries in Egypt, 69½ feet high, 7 feet 9 inches by 7 feet 8½ inches at base, and weighs 448,000 pounds. It was erected in the sixteenth century in Helipolis, near Cairo. Presented to the United States by the Khedive of Egypt in 1877. Cost of removal, $102,567' (1912).
