Y. tmmmrmmmm^mmmmmmammm Air Nitrates From Nlag^ara Falls. In continuance of his previous re- ports on the manufacture of air ni- trates at Niagara Falls, Canada, Con- sul W. H. H. Webster now writes: "The first shipment of calcium cyana- mid, or lime nitrogen, on the American continent was made from the plant at Niagara Palls, Ont., December 14, 1909. The shipment was 300 bags (26 tons), and was consigned to the office of the American Cyanamid Co. at Baltimore, Md. It is not the intention of the company to sell directly to the farmer or consumer, as the cyanamid will be sold to fertilizing plants to be used by them in the manufacture of fertilizers. They will use about 300 pounds of cyanamid to the ton of fer- tilizer. The oflBces at Nashville, Tenn., and at New York have been abolished, and the headquarters of the company are now established at Baltimore. Very little, if any, cyanamid will be sold in Canada, as the fertilizer in- dustry is not well developed here. The entire output of the plant will be consigned to the Baltimore office, and, as the cyanamid will be used for fer- tilizing purposes only, it will go into the United States free of duty. The Niagara Palls plant represents an in- vestment of $500,000, and it is planned to enlarge the plant to produce 40,000 tons of cyanamid per" annum. In the
