Theodore Roussel. Two Flowers. 1890–1895. England. Soft ground etching in brown-black on cream wove paper In the early 1890s Roussel spent considerable time investigating intaglio techniques, pursuing a range of tonal effects from nuanced shading to rich, dark passages. For these two small studies he used soft ground etching alone in one case and combined three techniques in the other. They represent work toward Roussel’s monochrome masterpiece, L’agonie des fleurs, as well as his diminutive color work Last Poppies, exhibited below and also in its final version in an adjacent gallery.
