Plaque commemorating Sir George Grove, author of the 'Dictionary of Music and Musicians', in Sydenham Road, London, England

This plaque at 208 Sydenham Road was erected by the London Borough of Lewisham to commemorate the life of Sir George Grove. He was a civil engineer with a speciality in lighthouses, until he was appointed first Secretary to the Crystal Palace Company. Among his other duties, he was responsible for writing the programme notes for the Saturday concerts and eventually became an expert on music. His Dictionary of Music and Musicians is still published, having gone through several editions since the nineteenth century and is also now available electronically.
