It is said thatthey combined to run out the rawyouth whose appearance indicated Spring was at first easily beaten by them injustices court, but his knowl-edge of the law enabled him to secure reversals and after a year or two hebecame master of the situation. He always liked to practice in justicescourt; and even after his elevation to the bench he arranged to go into Alle-gany county on pettifogging trips, but was prevented by other engage-ments. Ever clear and earnest in his convictions he at once took high rankin his profession, and was always distinguished for his complete mastery ofhis cases and thorough knowledge of legal principles.
