Hylas and Water Nymphs

In Greek mythology, Hylas accompanied Heracles on the Argonautic expedition. When Heracles disembarked on the coast of Mysia to cut a fresh oar, Hylas went ashore to get water. At the fountain, he met the nymphs pictured in this painting by J. W. Waterhouse that is housed in the Manchester, England, Art Gallery. When Heracles went to look for Hylas, he could not find him. Hylas was never found.
