Public works . hown, revealing in detail the processemployed from the mixing of the concrete to thecompletion of the road. These moving pictures alsoshowed the system devised for recording roadshocks, impacts and other features. Moving pic-tures have been taken and will continue to be takenof the tests until the experiments are completed. Themoving picture operator succeeded in photographinga section which happened to break under the impactof the truck wheels while the picture was beingtaken, which is considered very fortunate. Moving pictures were taken of the Ames dials asthe trucks were run over the impact planks placedacross the track over the tunnel, and the action ofthe hand on the dial was shown very clearly. Up to and including January 2, trucks runningover the highway had aggregated 75,866 travel miles,%vhile a total weight of 2,691,490 tons had passedover each slab which forms part of the roadbed. As the weaker sections break up, the breaks arerepaired, as shown in some of the accompanying. JUST PASSING A BREAK IN February 11. 1922 PUBLIC WORKS 103 photos. The broken concrete is removed and anexcavation made to a depth of 16 inches below thesurface of the concrete pavement. Timbers 4 inchessquare are placed on the bottom of the excavationand on these are placed timbers 12 inches square, thus bringing the top of the timbers on a level withthe surface of the concrete pavement. In one break, concrete blocks about 6 inches thick were used inmaking repairs. This proved very satisfactory andis shown in one of the photographs. The evidence of traffic wearing away the concretesurface has been lacking. In fact, in the straightsections of the road no appreciable evidence of wearcan be seen. SCOPE OF TESTS* The following tests were planned and have beendeveloped up to date: 1. Static load, moving load and impact deflectionsin the slabs overlying the four observation are taken for a single loaded truck at variouspositions of the slab. 2. Impact deflection
