The land now called Cranberry Lake Preserve consists of a trail network leading curious hikers on a virtual historical tour. Purchased by Westchester County in 1967, the area played an important role in the construction of the Kensico Dam, which was completed in 1917. The Kensico Dam Plaza at the base of the Dam currenlty represents the northern terminus, at Valhalla, of the Bronx River Reservation. The Reservation is a linear park and opened in 1925, the country's first parkway, and consists of 807 acres spanning over 13 miles. Most of the stone used in the construction of the Dam was mostly mined in the area. Essentially an industrial process, significant space was required for machinery and equipment such as an electric plant, sand pit, stone crushing plant, and railroad tracks to transport materiel. All this left a lasting mark on the landscape and can still be viewed today. The area also featured the homes and schools of Italian laborers, primary builders of the Dam, and their families, who helped to shape the character of Valhalla and surrounding communities.
