Antarctic weather balloon research. Researcher releasing a weather balloon at Concordia Station, a research station in Antarctica. The base was completed in 2005. It is over 1000 kilometres inland, high on the Antarctic plateau at an altitude of 3233 metres, at the location called Dome C. It is a permanent, all-year research station, the third to be built in Antarctica. It is jointly operated and run by France and Italy. The location is used for meteorological and glaciological research, and also for astronomical research. It is inside the polar vortex formed by the ozone hole, and so can be used to study the variation in ozone levels high in the stratosphere.
