During theregular terms he attended the dis-trict school. When al)out 13 yearsold he went to Fentonville schooland remained a couple of he A\ent to Iowa Universityfor one year, then to Ann ArborHigh School for two years andentered the University of Michi-gan in September, 1866, with theclass of 70. He was a meinber of the Philozetian debating club and the Literary Adelphi society. After being graduated with the class he traveled through some of. 148 Class of 70, University of Michigan. the Western states and visited his brother at Lawrence. Kans. Inthe fall of 1870 he purchased a horse and buggy at Lawrence anddrove through the country back to Michigan, selling some bookson the way to pay expenses. He then entered the law departmentof the University of Alichigan and was graduated in 1872, spend-ing his summer vacations at the old homestead on the farm. Hethen visited northern Michigan and finally located at Port Huronin the practice of law. In the following year he decided to give uplaw practice and to take up journalism. He exerted his effortsin the political field, by voice and pen. battling for bimetalism andagainst trusts and monopolies. In 1875 ^^^- Marsh became moreconspicuous in political work, writing and speaking for reforms inlegislation with a view of checking the tendency towards cen-tralization.
