He received a limitededucation as he labored in the cot-tnn mills, and afterwards widenedliis educational experience by a studyi»f medicine and theolo2;y at a rigid Presbyterian andstrongly religiously inclined, he re-solved upon entering missionarywork in Africa. Offering his servicesto the London Missionary Society, theywere accepted, and. later, being or-dained, he left England, in 1840. forPort Natal.
