Azel Ames (1845-1908), US physician and sanitarian. Ames graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1871 and became a practicing physician before turning his attention to sanitation and public health. During the Spanish-American War (1898) he was acting-assistant surgeon to the US Army. Here, he is in his US Volunteers (USV) uniform. He joined the USV in 1899 as a major and brigadier surgeon. During his time in the USV he served in Puerto Rico where he was director of the programme to vaccinate the island's population against smallpox.
