For consideration of this disease, the reader is referred to the sectionon Infectious Diseases, Chapter I., Part II. (Plate XXI.) Chronic Interstitial Pneumonia. Cirrhosis, fibroid phthisis, and chronic interstitial pneumonia are namesgiven to a condition of chronic induration of the lung, caused by inter-stitial over-growth of fibrous tissue. Obliteration of the air-vesicles andcontraction of the lung result from the over-growth. The bronchi arefrequently dilated, and cavities and gangrene may occur. The disease israre except as the result of tuberculosis, but it may follow pneumonia andpleurisy, and it is said to be caused by inhalation of fine particles of steel PLATE
