Berlin 2009 1989 DDR Germany Unified positive forward history War Cold War end East West Traffic Lights Divide city Berlin Wall

Berlin 2009. Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall which I photographed in 1989 for the Independent Newspaper I returned to photograph the changes that have happened over the past 20 years. Potsdamer Platz with Leipziger Platz off to the right and in the former eastern sector. The WALL ran across Potsdamer Platz through the centre of the image. The photograph is taken from the former Western side from the site of the cold war viewing platform. On the left can be seen a copy of the worlds first Traffic Lights, note that they are horizontal. The buildings are: L-R Beisheim Centre and Hotel Ritz-Carlton by Hilmer and Sattler, 2004. The Bankhaus Delbruck by Hans Kollhof, 2003. A 'Mock up' of Leipziger Platz 18 by Rave Architects and on the right Mosse-Palais by Strauch and Gallagher, 1996 befor a further 'mock up' on the extreme right. 2009
