An old engraving of Fairbank’s testing machine. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. Here any item placed in the centre of the machine can have breaking, crushing or deflecting force exerted upon it via gearing and screws operated by the hand-wheel at the side of the equipment. Readings of any stress can be calculated on the scale (left). American Thaddeus Fairbanks (1796 –1886) was an American inventor. In 1824 he built an iron foundry in St Johnsbury, Vermont, USA with his brother Erastus. His most famous invention was the Fairbanks platform scales.
