Ruin of the Monastery of Santa María la Real de Obona along the Camino Primitivo. After visiting, King Alfonso IX designated the monastery as a place of mandatory passage for pilgrims in the 12th century. This less-traveled route of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage runs southwest from the Asturian capital of Oviedo, eventually joining the Camino Frances and ending in Santiago de Compostela, Galicia.
