Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Phoenix Lake, in front the renaturalised Emscher under the B236 bridge. The river has been transformed into a near-natural watercourse, flood protection and biodiversity through newly designed floodplains. A former industrial wasteland of 99 hectares was converted into residential, work and leisure areas and 24 hectares of lake area. In the event of heavy rainfall, the lake acts as a rainwater retention basin. Following the construction of a parallel sewer, the Emscher is now free of wastewater, having previously been an open, above-ground wastewater sewer, combined sewer with surface water and wastewater. The Phoenix Lake, a showcase project for structural change, is an artificially created lake on the site of the former Phoenix Ost steelworks in Dortmund's Hoerde district.
