Printer's page title and frontispiece engraving from Charles Lyell's 1863 \The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man\" together with a paleolithic flint handaxe from the Thames gravels and a CDV and revised dated manuscript page from Lyell. The Antiquity of Man dealt with the question of the long chronology of the human race (as had been raised by Boucher de Perthes, Falconer, Evans and Prestwich in the previous years). It also considered the evidence for the existance of ice ages and Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. The book reversed Lyell's own earlier negative views on all three issues - though Darwin felt that on evolution he had not gone far enough. Falconer and Lubbock felt that their work on pre-history had not been sufficiently credited, causing controversy at the time. Nonetheless having the support of Lyell brought broader acceptance for all three theories."
