The Tongariro crossing is often described as the best one day hike in New Zealand. It is a demanding 17km (10 mile) trek through a bleak and unpredictable active volcanic landscape. Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro were used to depict Mount Doom in Peter Jackson's adaptation of Tolkiens "Lord of the Rings".
