Solar spectroscopy. Artwork of solar eruptions combined with spectroscopic observations of the Sun. The depictions of the solar eruptions (prominences) and a planet (left, included for scale), form the background to the bars of a spectrograph. These bars (white) represent absorption of light by elements present in the Sun. Analysis of absorption and emission spectra has allowed scientists to identify chemical elements present in the Sun and other stars, such as helium (discovered 1868). Artwork from the third volume (first period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
