Young Female Black Tail Prairie Dog Near Her Burrow Denver Colorado
Young Prairie Dogs in spring near their burrow are usually born in April or May. They do not actually hibernate in winter. Black Tail Prairie Dogs are part of the rodent family known as Sciuridae commonly found through out Colorado and parts of North America. Although they stand at only 30 cm (12 in.) high and weigh about 1 kg (1-3 lb.), black-tailed prairie dogs make a substantial impact on the ecosystem of the North American plains and are counted as being a threatened species. According to about 98 percent of all prairie dogs were exterminated, during the 20th century and their range subsequently shrunken to about five percent of its historic spread This prairie dog was photographed in a prairie dog colony near the Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Reserve in the Denver/Commerce City area of Colorado
