Augustine of Canterbury (born in the first third of the 6th century – and died 604) was a Catholic Benedictine monk who became the first Archbishop of Canterbury in the year 597. He is considered to be the "Apostle to the English" and a founder of the Catholic Church in England. In 595 Pope Gregory the Great chose him to lead the Gregorian mission, to Britain to Christianize the Pagan King Æthelberht and his Kingdom of Kent from Anglo-Saxon paganism. Æthelberht had married Christian Princess Bertha, who was expected to exert some influence over her husband.
