During the time the seat of nationalgovernment was at Philadelphia, Binghams house was theabode of hospitality and the resort of the most distinguishedpeople of the time. A daughter of Bingham married Alex-ander Baring, afterward Lord Ashburton, and thus it passedinto the Baring family, from whom it was purchased forPark purposes. Lansdowne would have been a most inter-esting relic for preservation, but unfortunately it was burnedsome years ago—before the Park was established.
