Bendixen received a limited edu-cation in the schools of his native land, andwas reared to farm life. During the Civil war Mr. Bendixen en-hsted October 29, 1861, in Comppmy D, Fif-teenth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, whichwas assigned to the Army of the Cumber-land, and at different times was under thecommand of Commodore Foote, GeneralsBuell, Rosecrans and Sherman. His firstengagement of any importance was the siegeof Island No. 10, which was followed by thebattles of Perryville, Stone River and Chick-amauga.
