The Lunar New Year Parade in Flushing, Queens is among the largest in the United States. In 2011 the parade was dominated by members of Falun Dafa (Falun Gong), the movement banned and persecuted by the Chinese government. Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa, began in China in the 1990s. It involves meditation and slow stretching to promote spiritual awakening. The group says it is non-political and not a religion.
