The open patronage of the Jesuits, the gorgeousprocessions through the streets, in which the King himself took part, anda law which proposed to punish sacrilege with death, aroused uncompro-mising hostility in a city where the teaching of Voltaire still 1825 the funeral of General Foy, the most eloquent leader of theopposition, gave an opportunity for a grand Liberal demonstration. Tosilence criticism the Government brought in a new law to shackle thepress, but it was received with such disfavor in both chambers that it hadto be withdrawn.
