Croesus on the Funeral Pyre
Croesus, king of Lydia, died around 546 A symbol of wealth to the Greeks, he allied himself with Egypt and Babylonia against Cyrus the Great of Persia. Defeated and captured, he was condemned to the funeral pyre, pictured in the late 19th-century drawing, but when he invoked the name of Solon, Cyrus had let him live and had him as an advisor.
