1921 illustration - Sir Walter Raleigh (1552/544 - 1618) being taken to the Tower of London after his arrest. He was a noted English landed gentleman as well as a notable writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer who popularised tobacco in England. He was beheaded in the Old Palace Yard ,Westminster on 29 October 1618 following which Lady Raleigh kept her husband's head in a velvet bag until her own death.
