Panorama of the Swan Lake, a major attraction in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to numerous species of aquatic plants

Established in 1859, the Singapore Botanic Gardens is the only tropical garden to be honoured as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in recognition for its role in the region's rubber trade and for its tropical colonial garden landscape. Located at the fringe of the city's Orchard Road shopping district, it houses more than 10,000 species of flora, spread over its area of 82 hectares (200 acres). Constructed in 1866, the Swan Lake is considered to be the oldest ornamental water-feature in Singapore and is a major attraction in the Botanic Gardens.
