Frozen Great Lakes, 2014. Satellite image showing ice covering much of the Great Lakes during an intense cold snap that gripped much of central Canada and the US in early January 2014. These weather conditions brought thick and widespread ice to the Great Lakes. Although parts of the Great Lakes freeze every winter, several accounts suggested that the January 2014 ice cover was thicker and more widespread than it had been for nearly twenty years. Imaged by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite, on 9th January 2014.
